The End of Glen Cove
Mayor’s Trophy Tournament
After twelve years plus, Glen Cove Junior Baseball & Softball has announced the end of our tournament. Our tournament was operated by volunteers, who worked at the fields, every day during the June-August period. The net proceeds of the tournament paid down the operating loss from our little league. Additionally, we were able to make an annual donation to the City for the lights, and which enabled our operation to begin the following little league year with a start-up fund for our intramural program.
We took great pride in running the “Best and largest tournament in the tristate area.” Last year we scheduled 95 teams, over 300 games with 1,100 black-out requests during a seven week period that also included rain outs and over 100 game changes for other playoffs. This enabled a large amount of teams, who played competitive baseball & softball to play as much baseball & softball as possible, while entering our tournament. Some teams front loaded or back loaded schedules to play in the Mayor’s Trophy. Others gave us their open summer dates and we all made it work. We were extremely proud of this as many of you told us that our tournament was the best around. What was better than coming to the John Maccarone Memorial Stadium for a night game and seeing so much baseball & softball activity, every night? We were baseball & softball advocates and we loved doing this.
There were people who felt we should just schedule the teams and leave it at that-take it or leave it. We knew this was not the way to build a 95+team tournament, nor was it the way to run a business.
During November 2014, we were told by the City that they wanted to take over operating baseball in Glen Cove. Many of us have been involved with Glen Cove Junior Baseball & Softball since the early 1990’s and were saddened by the Mayor’s decision.
Our tournament is no more. We enjoyed the friendships that came out of the summers for so many years. We were proud of the fact that 95% of the teams that played each summer always came back for another summer in Glen Cove. We thank you for frequenting our businesses, buying gas, using the deli’s and eating in our restaurants. I know our friends who operate these businesses appreciated this too. We were proud to proclaim last year that we had 37 teams from Brooklyn and Queens in the tournament.
We will miss every team and wish you nothing but good baseball & softball, fun and good weather during the summer. And as Ernie Banks said,” Hey, it’s a great day, let’s play two.”
